Chip Solar House is powered by the sun and controlled through Xbox Kinect (Digital Trends)

Chip-Solar-House-is-powered-by-the-sun-and-controlled-through-Xbox-Kinect

There is a lot that goes into making a house green, and we don?t mean just slapping a coat of paint on it. Building an energy efficient home is hard enough, let alone maintaining a home that doesn?t harm the environment by wasting resources and over consuming energy. Little things like switching off the lights and adjusting the thermostat go a long way in conserving energy, but it isn?t always easy, and it can be difficult fiddling with all of that on a day to day basis. Enter the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arch) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and their easy-to-use CHIP Solar House, a cutting-edge solar home you control with a wave of your hands and the help of Xbox Kinect.

CHIP, which stands for Compact, Hyper-Insulated Prototype Solar House utilizes an Xbox Kinect as its means of control. Tasks like turning off the lights or turning down the thermostat can now be accessed through gesture controls. Wave your arm or flick your wrist, it doesn?t matter. CHIP was designed to make maintaining an energy neutral home as streamlined as possible. The house even features a 3-D camera that can go a step further by tracking your movements and auto-switching off a light when you leave a room. Who said being green wasn?t easy?

Of course besides being unique on the inside, the CHIP Solar House also carries with it a distinct look with its insulation stretched around the exterior of the house (resembling the material found on the inside of a padded cell). The house measures 750-square feet and took over two years, more than 100 students, and $1 million to build?however according to SCI-Arch and Caltech, the house could be replicated for as little as $300,000. So while being green might be easy, it isn?t exactly cheap.?

Ship search finds 12th body, captain's documents (AP)

GIGLIO, Italy ? Divers plumbing the capsized Costa Concordia's murky depths pulled out the body of a woman in a life vest Saturday, while scuba-diving police swam through the captain's cabin to retrieve a safe and documents belonging to the man who abandoned the cruise liner after it was gashed by a rocky reef on the Tuscan coast.

Hoping for a miracle ? or at least for the recovery of bodies from the ship that has become an underwater tomb ? relatives of some of the 20 missing appealed to survivors of the Jan. 13 shipwreck to offer details that could help divers reach loved ones while it is still possible to search the luxury liner. The clock is ticking because the craft is perched precariously on a rocky ledge of seabed near Giglio island.

"We are asking the 4,000 persons who were on board to give any information they can about any of the persons still missing," said Alain Litzler, a Frenchman who is the father of missing passenger Mylene Litzler. "We need precise information to help the search and rescue teams find them."

The death toll rose to at least 12 Saturday after a water-logged body was extracted from a passageway near a gathering point for evacuation by lifeboats in the rear of the vessel, Coast Guard Cmdr. Filippo Marini said. It was not immediately clear if the woman was a passenger or crew member. A female Peruvian bartender and several adult female passengers were among the 21 people listed as missing before the latest corpse was found.

Relatives of the bartender and of an Indian crewman, along with two children of an elderly couple from Minnesota who are among the missing, boarded a boat Saturday to view the wrecked Concordia Saturday, said a maritime official, Fabrizio Palombo.

Family members tossed flowers near the site while islanders standing on the rocky edge of the island also strew bouquets on the water in a tribute to the victims.

Another Coast Guard official, Cosimo Nicastro, said the woman's body was found during a particularly risky inspection.

"The corridor was very narrow, and the divers' lines risked snagging" on furniture and objects floating in the passageway, Nicastro said. To help the coast guard divers reach the area, Italian navy divers had preceded them, setting off charges to blast holes for easier entrance and exit.

Meanwhile, police divers, carrying out orders from prosecutors investigating Captain Francesco Schettino for suspected manslaughter and abandoning the ship, swam through the cold, dark waters to reach his cabin. State TV and the Italian news agency ANSA reported that the divers located and remove his safe and two suitcases. His passport and several documents were also pulled out, state media said.

Searchers inspecting the bridge Saturday also found a hard disk containing data of the voyage, Sky TG24 TV reported.

Three bodies were found in waters around the ship in the first hours after the accident. Since then, divers have gone inside the Concordia to recover all the remaining victims, who were apparently unable to escape the lurching ship during a chaotic evacuation launched almost an hour after the liner hit a reef.

Some survivors who couldn't board lifeboats waited for hours aboard the capsizing craft for rescue by helicopters while others jumped into the water and swam to safety.

The last survivor, found aboard 36 hours after the crash, was an Italian crewman who broke his leg in the confusion and couldn't leave the ship.

The Concordia hit the reef, well-marked on maritime and even tourist maps, while most of the passengers sat down to dinner in the main restaurant, about two hours after the ship had set sail from the port of Civitavecchia on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Costa Crociere, the ship's operator and subsidiary of U.S.-based Carnival Cruise Lines, has said the captain had deviated without permission from the vessel's route in an apparent maneuver to sail close to the island of Giglio and impress passengers.

Schettino, despite audiotapes of his defying Coast Guard orders to scramble back aboard, has denied he abandoned ship while hundreds of passengers were desperately trying to get off the capsizing vessel. He has said he coordinated the rescue from aboard a lifeboat and then from the shore.

The effort to find survivors and bodies has postponed an operation to remove heavy fuel in the Concordia's tanks; specialized equipment has been standing by for days.

Light fuel, apparently from machinery aboard the capsized ship, was spotted in nearby waters, authorities said Saturday.

But Nicastro said there was no indication that any of the nearly 500,000 gallons (2,200 metric tons) of heavy fuel oil has leaked from the ship's double-bottomed tanks, seen as a risk if the ship's position changes. He said the leaked substance appears to be diesel, which is used to fuel rescue boats and dinghies and as a lubricant for ship machinery.

There are 185 tons of diesel and lubricants on board the crippled vessel, which is lying on its side just outside Giglio's port. Nicastro described the fuel in the sea as "very light, very superficial" and appearing to be under control.

But an official leading rescue, search and anti-pollution efforts for the ship suggested that the luxury liner would have leaked contaminants on board when it tipped over.

"We must not forget that on that ship there are oils, solvents, detergents, everything that a city of 4,000 people needs," Franco Gabrielli, the head of Italy's civil protection agency, told reporters in Giglio.

Gabrielli was referring to the roughly 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew who were aboard the cruise liner when it ran into the reef and, with seawater rushing into a 230-foot (70-meter) gash in its hull, listed and fell onto its side. "Contamination of the environment, ladies and gentlemen, already occurred" when the liner capsized, Gabrelli said.

Vessels equipped with machinery to suck out the light fuel oil were in the area. Earlier on Saturday, crews removed oil-absorbing booms used to prevent environmental damage in case of a leak. Originally white, the booms were grayish.

Schettino, is under house arrest for investigation of alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before all were evacuated.

The search had been suspended Friday after the Concordia shifted, prompting fears the ship could roll off a rocky ledge of sea bed and plunge deeper into the pristine waters around Giglio, part of a seven-island Tuscan archipelago.

Just how much do you trust your spouse or partner? Enough to share passwords? For some, passwords are the final frontier of privacy not only in financial matters, but in social media and email correspondence. But for others, there are no secrets when you're in a relationship?? even risking the potential payback should a break-up sever the happy union.

The New York Times tells us about an "intimate custom" writer Matt Ritchel says is happening between teens in love: "sharing their passwords to email,?Facebook?and other accounts." The desire to be one even extends, the article claims, to couples creating identical passwords and letting each other read private emails and texts.?

For some, it takes a court order to share so much.

But for others, it's imperative to know each other's passwords as part of an open, healthy and fully functioning relationship. Sometimes this comes after a loss of trust, as when one partner has cheated on the other. On the Surviving Infidelity website, where more than 34,000 members have exchanged stories of betrayal and support one another in the forums, there is a saying that becomes a mantra for many of them: "Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing." To that end, nothing is private anymore in order to facilitate healing for the offended party.?

In this philosophy, those who have been unfaithful should share (or make open and available) not only passwords to their email accounts and Facebook, but also the contents of their text messages, phone logs, work and travel itineraries "without qualms."

Many in those forums mention how finding secret Facebook and email correspondences led to the big reveal of infidelity in their marriages and relationships, and we've seen surveys that attribute at least some fault in Facebook, though an informal poll we took at the end of year showed that nearly half of the 876 votes attributed the demise of their marriages with other factors. But 34 percent did blame Facebook.

Some of the teens in the New York Times article who opened themselves up were dealt a nasty lesson in human nature when their not-so-better halves decided to use the passwords in retaliation for perceived wrongs. The Times listed some examples:

The stories of fallout include a spurned boyfriend in junior high who tries to humiliate his ex-girlfriend by spreading her e-mail secrets; tensions between significant others over scouring each other?s private messages for clues of disloyalty or infidelity; or grabbing a cellphone from a former best friend, unlocking it with a password and sending threatening texts to someone else.

Take our poll and let us know if couples should share passwords.

Digital lockers a growing piracy concern (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Digital storage services like Megaupload, which was accused of criminal copyright violations on Thursday, play a small but growing role in a broader piracy problem that continues to evolve and dog the entertainment industry.

Some 3 million Americans every month used Megaupload, which is among the largest digital lockers, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said. Other entertainment executives said that number surged when other sites popular with digital pirates, such as LimeWire, were taken down.

"When we look at piracy behavior and uncompensated theft of music, a significant portion of consumer behavior migrates toward these locker sites" after shutdowns, said Victoria Bassetti, a music industry consultant and former anti-piracy chief at record label EMI.

"Anecdotally, when we have pre-release leaks, the first week there is a massive amount of consumer trade that goes directly to Megaupload's door."

Peer-to-peer systems like BitTorrent, which have little central coordination and are harder to stop, still have about three times as much usage among consumers as digital lockers, said NPD market researcher Russ Crupnick.

Only about 3 percent of the U.S. Internet audience relied on digital storage for legitimate purposes or piracy in the third quarter, he said.

Megaupload and its ilk may be a bigger factor in video piracy because movies take much longer to download via peer-to-peer networks, Crupnick said. Digital lockers allow anyone to upload, store and distribute links to most forms of electronic content.

The U.S. Justice Department released an indictment Thursday accusing Megaupload's founders and other officers of criminal conspiracy, arguing that they encouraged copyright violations and in some cases copied protected content themselves. Four people involved with the site were arrested in New Zealand.

The indictment cited internal emails referring to piracy and Megaupload's policy of rewarding users whose content was downloaded most often, which prosecutors said encouraged the distribution of prime Hollywood fare.

An attorney for the company said Friday that the site merely allowed users to upload material and that it would fight the charges.

RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy said that lockers were "generally the fastest growing form of Internet piracy."

Like other shutdowns, the interruption of Megaupload will send some pirates to rivals but should encourage others to buy or rent content legally, Lamy said.

"The realistic objective is not to eliminate piracy but to make it as inconvenient as possible," he said. "Some of the users you peel off."

The takedown enraged some Internet activists, who launched denial-of-service attacks that temporarily rendered websites of the Justice Department, FBI and big entertainment companies unreachable.

Some of them argued that the arrests showed that there was no need for laws like those that were withdrawn from consideration in Congress this week that would have made it much easier to block access to sites accused of fostering piracy.

But entertainment executives said that they would try again to pass such bills because they are aimed more at attacking demand rather than supply. In addition, many file-sharing sites do not have Megaupload's ties to the United States or allied countries.

"It is not hard necessarily to do something in New Zealand, but it is hard to get people in Russia and China," Bassetti said.

Big Sean, Willow Smith To Get Jahlil Beats Treatment In 2012

'I'ma be working, 2012 you gonna see my name for real,' Meek Mill's producer tells Mixtape Daily.
By Rob Markman

Meek Mill and Rick Ross' "I'ma Boss" wasn't Jahlil Beats' first production credit, but it is by far the biggest. The track's crashing drum stack and swirling synth line set the perfect pace for the rap hit. Thanks in part to the sound bed that the Chester, Pennsylvania, producer provided, "I'ma Boss" landed at the top of many best-of-2011 rap lists, including our RapFix best songs list.

Now Jahlil, who has already produced for Chris Brown, Soulja Boy and Fabolous, is seeing even more doors open for him. "It's crazy because me and Meek started off from the bottom, from the basement, and for us to get on this type of level where people saying he had one of the best singles of the year and stuff like that, it's just a blessing for me," Jahlil told Mixtape Daily on the red carpet for the reopening of Jay-Z's 40/40 Club in New York on Wednesday night.

Last year, Jahlil signed on with Hov's Roc Nation as the label's in-house producer and he's looking forward to a fruitful 2012. "Right now I'm doing stuff for Willow [Smith], Meek, of course. I was just out in L.A. working with No ID on stuff for Big Sean," Beats said. "I'ma be working, 2012 you gonna see my name for real."

Who else would you like to see Jahlil Beats work with in 2012? Tell us in the comments!

Haiti to scold 'Baby Doc' for defying house arrest (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? The former Haitian dictator known as "Baby Doc" has been summoned to court to be scolded for violating the terms of his house arrest by venturing outside the capital, a judge said Thursday.

"Jean-Claude Duvalier needs to be in my office by 11:05 a.m." on Friday, Judge Carves Jean told the Associated Press at his the courthouse office in downtown Port-au-Prince. "If he's not, he'll be arrested by 11:10 a.m."

Duvalier's attorney argued that his client wasn't violating the law, because no such law exists. He also said he may file a complaint against the judge.

The law "is fantasy," lawyer Reynold Georges said by telephone. The judge "can do whatever he wants but he also has to pay the consequences. I'm a snake. I don't play."

Duvalier faces criminal charges that include embezzlement, torture and murder.

After making an unexpected return to his homeland last year, Duvalier was placed under house arrest, meaning he wasn't authorized to travel outside the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area without legal consent.

The former dictator, always dressed in a navy blue suit, has been seen traveling the country, often at the wheel of a SUV. He delivered a commencement speech to law school graduates at a university in the countryside last month and has been spotted lounging on the beach.

Duvalier attended a memorial service last week that marked the two-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake. The event was hosted by President Michel Martelly and guests included former Haitian president Prosper Avril and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the United Nations' special envoy to Haiti.

The prosecution of Duvalier has made little headway since it began last year and rights groups fear he will go unpunished.

Georges and the rest of the defense team argue there are no grounds to prosecute the former president because the statute of limitations on his alleged offenses has expired.

Brazil bans sale of Dutch co's breast implants

(AP) ? The sale of Dutch-branded breast implants made by a French company at the center of an international scandal has been banned in Latin America's biggest country, Brazil's health ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry's National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance said in a statement that the banned implants were sold by Rofil Medical Nederland BV.

The agency later announced that the government will pay for the removal of ruptured implants sold by Rofil and France's now-defunct Poly Implant Prothese company.

The agency said that so far it knows of 39 women who are entitled to the have their implants removed free of charge.

Brazil and many other nations already have banned implants from the PIP company that were made with cheap, industrial-grade silicone instead of medical-grade gel. The agency said Rofil had outsourced the production of its implants to PIP.

"The government will only pay for the removal of ruptured implants," an agency official said by telephone. "We are not offering free preventive surgeries." He declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The agency says it did not know how many Rofil implants were imported and sold in Brazil.

In late December the agency said Brazil imported 34,631 implants made by PIP and that 24,534 of them had been sold.

LG: TVs you can talk to, without sounding crazy (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Talking to the TV is usually a sign of extreme agitation, mental instability or loneliness. LG Electronics is set to make it a more rational behavior this year, with a range of TVs that respond to speech.

The company will sell a remote with its high-end flat-panel TVs that contains a microphone. You'll be able to speak into the microphone to enter text on the TV for Twitter updates and Web searches. You won't be able to change the channel or control the volume by yelling at the TV.

TV makers will be showing off many variations of so-called "smart" or Web-connected TVs at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. LG Electronics USA showed off its new TVs Monday, a day ahead of the show's opening.

"Smart" TVs have been around for a few years, but two things are holding them back. One is that the conventional TV remote is a hopeless tool for Web browsing, typing, and other PC-like behaviors.

"Anyone who's actually checked email on a 50-inch TV knows it's not a good experience," said Shawn Dubravac, head of research at the Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on the show.

As TVs have become more and more capable, that's meant more buttons on the remotes, but that's a trend that can't continue, he said. TV makers are now looking around for alternatives. Last year, LG introduced a "Magic Wand" remote that's motion-sensitive, much like a game-console controller. This year, it's taking another page from Microsoft Corp.'s Kinect game console and introducing a 3D camera that perches on top of a TV and interprets the viewers' motions, letting them control the cursor with hand movements.

"I think 2012 will be the year of the interface," Dubravac said.

The other thing holding back "smart" TV is that viewers interact more with the cable or satellite set-top box than they do with the TV itself. The set-top box is where you find shows and change the channel.

Cable and satellite companies seem far less interested in revamping how people interact with their boxes. Dish Network Corp. unveiled a new box it calls the "Hopper" on Monday. It takes digital video recording to a new level by automatically recording all primetime shows of the four major networks. But it comes with a conventional remote, covered in buttons.

Sony's Kaz Hirai to step up as president as early as April

Nikkei is reporting that Sony will be promoting current Executive Deputy President Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai to president as soon as April, while Howard Stringer is expected to remain chairman and CEO of the company. As you may recall, Sony started its search for a new president as far back as November 2010, and with Kaz's two promotions last year (to Executive Deputy President in April and to Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman in September), it isn't surprising that he's the chosen one to pick up some of Sir Howard's work. It'll be a while before we see the consequences of this promotion, and anything can happen between now and the board meeting as early as next month to seal the deal; but here's hoping that under Kaz, Sony will go easy on all these new memory card formats while it further unifies its various groups within the corporation.

Why Aren?t Chromebooks Saving Password Changes?

chromebooksThere's something weird going on with?Chromebooks - the Google-branded laptop computers powered by the company's web-based operating system Chrome OS. They're not saving the password changes you make to your Google account. Basically, if you change your password, shut down your machine, then reboot, the Chromebook will ask you for your old password instead of the new one. The problem has to do with Google's sessions being persistent (that is, they don't log you out), and leads to a relatively minor security threat. Meaning, if someone was to take advantage of this threat, they would need physical access to your Chromebook. In the grand scheme of things, that puts this threat on the low-end of the risk spectrum. However, because Chromebooks are pitched as low-cost, secure, easy-to-use alternatives to traditional laptops for businesses and educational institutions, it's important to highlight issues such as this to make the community aware. Also, I just think it's annoying.

Jefferson County debt holders file questions in challenge to largest U.S. government bankruptcy

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A bank representing Jefferson County debt holders and lawyers who successfully challenged the county's 2009 occupational tax have filed their proposed questions to ask the Alabama Supreme Court about the county's right to seek bankruptcy protection.

The submissions were requested by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Thomas Bennett, as creditors seek to block Jefferson County's Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing over its $4.23 billion in debts, including $3.14 billion for a court-ordered sewer rehabilitation program.

The creditors contend Jefferson County does not have the right under Alabama law to file for bankruptcy, because it did not have any outstanding bond debt. The county has amassed its debt through bond-like debt instruments called warrants.

But the county contends it can legitimately seek Chapter 9 protection because it had issued bonds in the past and commissioners approved a resolution in July contemplating the need for future bond sales.

The lawyers want the bankruptcy judge to ask the Alabama Supreme Court if the county must have outstanding bond debt to file bankruptcy, and what effect past county bond sales or commissioners' stated future plans to sell bonds would have on the county's right to seek protection from creditors.

In a hearing earlier this month, Bennett said he had not decided if he would submit questions to the Alabama Supreme Court on its interpretation of the state government bankruptcy law. Wednesday was the deadline for lawyers to file their proposed questions to the bankruptcy judge.

The state high court currently is considering a similar issue regarding a bankruptcy petition filed by the south Alabama town of Prichard. A bankruptcy judge rejected Prichard's petition because it had outstanding warrant debt but no bond debt, and the town filed an appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Debris from Japan tsunami washes up on B.C. shores

Beachcombers in Tofino have noticed a significant uptick in debris of Japanese origin on their shores, a sign that items swept out to sea by the tsunami in Japan may have found their way to B.C. earlier than expected.

"In or around Dec. 5th the first item or two of some consequence was found," said Tofino mayor Perry Schmunk. "Some lumber came ashore that had Japanese export stamps on it."

On Christmas Day, Schmunk and his family were walking the beaches of Schooner Bay in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve when they made what he calls an "eerie" find, each marked with Japanese writing: a toothbrush and a baby's sock.

Schmunk said he felt intuitively that these personal items might be tied to the tragedy that occurred in March 2011, when a magnitude 9 earthquake triggered a tsunami leaving an estimated 20,000 people dead.

"If what we're finding is tied to the tragedy that occurred last March, it's not just litter."

Schmunk has carefully pre-served the toothbrush and sock, and hopes to set up a website to document each item, no matter how small, that may be person-ally significant or bring comfort to a loved one in Japan.

Jean-Paul Froment of Tofi-no's Live To Surf shop has also been cataloguing found items possibly tied to the tsunami - lumber, water bottles, a can of glue - on his website, Liveto-Surf.com.

While it's normal to find occasional items of Japanese origin on the windswept shores of Vancouver Island, Schmunk said what they have found since early December has been "significantly more" than normal.

"There has been speculation as to whether it is or isn't tsunami debris; this is a wake-up call for us to be prepared for the volume and some potentially serious issues," he said.

If the Japanese debris arriving on the West Coast is tied to the tsunami, it's no surprise to oceanographer Curt Ebbesmeyer, who predicted in November that some of the 20-million-tonne debris field may land on our shores sooner than expected.

Ebbesmeyer ran a simulation with a buoy and found that the first of the debris could be arriving right about now, although the majority of it isn't expected until 2014.

Howard Freeland, a scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, predicted tsunami debris would begin to arrive around two years after the tragedy.

He is hesitant to confirm these latest finds as the beginning of a tsunami-related deluge.

"Flotsam from Japan has always washed up on the coast here. ... If plastic bottles washed ashore how would we know it is tsunami debris?"

Julianne McCaffrey, spokes-woman for Emergency Management B.C., said there have been many different guesses among the scientific community as to exactly when, and where, the tsunami debris will land.

Most scientists have predicted the debris, which weighs in at millions of tonnes and is roughly equivalent in size to the state of California, will land on the Pacific Northwest coast within two years of the tragedy.

Timing and volume will depend on ocean currents, sinking and winds.

McCaffrey said a provincial tsunami debris coordinating committee will begin meeting in January to determine how to deal with the potentially massive amount of debris.

"We've reached out to the Japanese consulate, Public Safety Canada, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment Canada," said McCaffrey.

In most cases the federal government has jurisdiction over water and shoreline, and if debris washes up over the high tide line, local authorities would take responsibility, he said.

If hazardous materials or human remains are found, that would fall to provincial authorities to deal with.

As for items of personal, symbolic and cultural value, or that may belong to victims or survivors of the tragedy, McCaffrey said authorities will be looking to the Japanese consulate for guidance. Mayor Schmunk believes that whatever comes ashore in the coming months, whether it's a water bottle of Japanese origin, a piece of wood or a child's sock, should be handled with care and catalogued.

What looks like detritus could be more than a haunting reminder of all that was lost; even the smallest personal item, a gift to be returned.

"People could reconnect through some of these things," said Schmunk.
