Throughout the history of individual civilization, folks have been showing their self-confidence and strength, not only by force, but also because of the noble art of presentation. Likewise, today??s globe leaders usually are admired and also esteemed when they have been the power to treat the public using poise and certainty. Such a large regard regarding public speaking helps to make the average person cringe at the idea of talking in front of viewers no matter how big or small the size. Whether or not giving any toast for a wedding or delivering a delivery to a substantial assembly, many people make a problem about presentation and try to cure it as much as possible. Nevertheless public speaking should not cause a real big fuss. Challenging as it can certainly be, presentation can be done with a few simple suggestions. To have at least a decent presentation, one should approach well. The world??s most famous leaders prepare for open addresses, and most even have squads to work with those programs. Well, even though one does not employ a speech preparation committee one can possibly prepare for presentation. First, you will need to know for what the occasion the speech is good for. The Gettysburg handle would definitely not appropriate for a wedding; thus, a delivery has to in shape the event where by it will be brought to. Second, you will need to examine the listeners who will see the speech. A good assembly of academics wouldn?t normally take a catchy speaker really; one should go with a suitable presentation style using the audience. 3 rd, one should consider what is staying expected in the speech. Some sort of farmer??s association would certainly usually not be interested on a presentation about the particulars of beadwork; you will need to carefully analyze the subject issue to be undertaken in public communicating. Online Real-estate Promoting . | House Store

Many barristers that concentrate on mould suits in real-estate claim they're helping the folks that live in these properties from illness and sure death. Mould has been about for much longer than Humans, and we have learned how to live and develop all along side of it. That is rather daft if you concentrate on it because humans has always lived round the mould. One terribly unlucky thing that happens to folk that own rental properties is that one of their renters will claim that there's mould on the property and make a complaint with either an official agency and / or thru a personal counsel. The barrister has a bunch of mates who will come and check it and they may file a case with the court.

Even though it is a tiny bit of mould, that may quickly and easily be cleaned up, it can cost the owner many thousands of bucks, not merely in legal costs but also in ripping out the walls and replacing them. As well as the island size, Hawaii also has some unique features related to atmosphere and standard of living for its residents the other islands may not. Here life feels similar to what suburban residents in other bits of the U.S. Experience. There's even an enormous park north of the Kailua Harbour in what used to be the airfield there.

Day-to-day activities include work and church, football games, and social engagements. Indeed, there remain a big numbers of properties in the retail sector in shopping arcades, with great vacancy rates. Specifically , people in the sector need to know which properties have sold, which projects are slated, which developments have been fast tracked by the town to boost commercial development, and they would like to know the statistical data and increases in the marketplace for retail space, warehouse space, business office space, and multiple unit housing. If you're an author and plan on writing about this industry, commercial real-estate or commercial construction subjects that I've a few recommendations for you. Coming up with articles about commercial construction isn't very easy, it needs a lot of analysis and a good quantity of information. Nevertheless if you do your prep you'll find that your articles will become valued highly by all the ones that read them. These points to consider are typically driven by current wants from planning authorities or other legal bodies and target the greenhouse gas part of global warming management. Assessing the results of global warming on development projects will gain in signification and a strategic and pro-active approach to its integration in the management of these projects has various benefits. These include the improved management of hazards, for example by giving protection against legal action for failing to take under consideration known future hazards, the protection of future asset values and fortifying a forward looking reputation of the organisation. Considering global warming in real-estate development projects should be thought to be a strategic issue. This will lead directly to a selection of new wants, tools and evaluation methodologies that pros in the property development sector can't afford to miss.

In Sudan, a daily struggle for spare parts

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - In Sudan's only shopping mall, in the capital Khartoum, customers need to walk up to the shops from the underground car park because the escalators have broken down. It is unclear when they might be fixed.

"The escalators are out of order and we are trying to find spare parts that are not available on the local market," a notice at the entrance of the Turkish-funded Afra Mall says.

In the international departure hall of Khartoum's international airport nearby, two escalators are out of service.

Importing foreign technology and spare parts to Sudan has never been easy; most Western firms shun the country because of a U.S. trade embargo imposed about 15 years ago over charges that the government hosted terrorists.

But the situation has been worsening since Sudan lost three-quarters of its oil production when its former civil war foe South Sudan became independent last July under a peace deal.

Struggling to find other sources of state income and hard currency, the central bank is trying to stop a slide of the Sudanese pound in the black market, where it is trading more than 80 percent below its official rate against the U.S. dollar.

Worried about depleting its foreign reserves, which are needed to buy basic food items abroad, the government is restricting imports of spare parts for much basic machinery, local businessmen say.

It is not clear exactly how critical the reserve situation is because the central bank does not publish foreign reserve levels. Last October, deputy central bank governor Badr al-Deen Abbas told the local press that Sudan had enough reserves to cover three months of basic imports; no update has been given since then.

In many countries, three months of import cover would be considered on the verge of being dangerously low. Some estimates suggest Sudan's plight is worse; the International Monetary Fund estimated late last year that Sudan's gross official reserves would total $800 million at the end of 2011, which would be under one month of its imports of goods and services.

The government's measures certainly suggest the situation is serious. Staff at several car repair garages said they had staged a strike for several days this month after the government asked them to stop importing second-hand spare parts.

"Prices have gone up by 30 percent since then. It's a big problem for customers and traders," said Mohammed El-Tayyeb, who runs a Khartoum garage packed with second-hand engines, gear boxes and car doors for Japanese, Korean and European cars.

"This second-hand Mitsubishi engine now costs 15,000 pounds (around $3,200 on the black market). Before the ban it was only 12,000," he said. "Customers come to us, ask about the price and leave immediately."

Several garage owners in the area said they had organized themselves into a committee to protest to the government against import restrictions.

"If they really implement the ban, we will protest and start legal action," said Mohamed Osman. Outside his workshop, an angry customer shouted at dealers over the price of a used gearbox for his minibus.

"I have been searching for six days and only found a Chinese copy of the gearbox," the customer complained.

Traders say the situation may worsen. Much of Sudan's car market uses only second-hand spare parts, since few people can afford new parts; the Mitsubishi engine in El-Tayyeb's garage would cost at least 45,000 pounds if bought new. Even government and army cars visit repair garages to obtain second-hand parts.

NO FLOWERS

The government insists it will overcome the economic crisis by boosting gold and agricultural exports to replace oil.

"The situation is under control," said Ishaq Adam Gamaa, state minister of petroleum, shrugging off the loss of about $5 billion in annual oil revenues because of the loss of oil fields with the South's secession.

Sudan has made $500 million from gold exports since the start of this year and expects livestock exports to hit record levels in 2012, he said.

"We came into the oil business only ten years ago so we have our system of taxing. We have of system of agricultural products, we have our system of livestock," Gamaa said.

But the economic crisis is being exacerbated by low productivity, the result of poor planning and corruption, private analysts say. Despite being rich in farmland, Sudan needs to import even basic food items such as sugar and fruit juices.

Since there is only one major sea port, in Port Sudan some 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) east of Khartoum, imports are expensive; they are trucked for days across the vast country, using a transport system that is likely to be slowed further by the shortage of parts.

Because of the U.S. embargo, plane makers Airbus and Boeing among others do not sell to Sudan, leaving state airline Sudan Airways and other local carriers struggling to get their hands on spare parts. Sudan Airways, one of the oldest African carriers, founded during British colonial rule over five decades ago, is down to around six ageing Airbus and Fokker planes, many bought in 1996.

"Sanctions are hell for everything, for maintenance, for spare parts," Sudan Airways General Manager al-Obeid Fadhl al-Moula said in a recent interview. "All the time there is a problem. I do get (spare parts) through friends and companies."

As spare parts become more difficult to find, some luxury consumer goods are vanishing almost entirely from shelves, businessmen say. Staff at three flower shops in Khartoum said they were finding it almost impossible to obtain new supplies as the central bank limited letters of credit for importers.

"We can't import flowers now," said one employee at an empty boutique.

Galaxy Note LTE gains access to T-Mobile's HSPA+ network with custom radio

Galaxy Note LTE gains access to T-Mobile's HSPA+ network with custom radio
To all T-Mobile users that've privately longed to wield the Galaxy Note, yet've remained deterred by its nasty EDGE speed limitation, we've just one thing to say: welcome to flavor country. A new workaround designed specifically for AT&T's LTE variant of the monolithic smartphone (and ostensibly, Canadian versions, but not the international model), has successfully enabled HSPA+ support for AWS networks. Just like the Galaxy S II Skyrocket hack, the process is fairly straightforward; users must simply enter a SIM unlock code and then flash one of three radio files to the handset -- feel free to experiment and pick the most reliable of the bunch. While all functions are said to work properly, your phone's battery life may take a hit, as reports indicate that signal strength isn't quite up to par. For those wanting to proceed, just be sure to obtain a stock copy of your phone's radio file before diving in -- otherwise, once the new baseband's in place, you'll be unable to access Ma Bell's LTE network. Isn't compromise the greatest?

Mississippi Internet Gaming Bill Dies in Committee | PokerNews

Mississippi

Online poker players from Mississippi received disappointing news last week when a bill aimed at legalizing the activity was killed in committee.

Rep. Bobby Moak introduced the Mississippi Lawful Internet Gaming Act of 2012 on Feb. 20, two months after the Department of Justice concluded that forms of gambling other than sports betting fell outside of the Wire Act of 1961. Moak's proposed measure aimed to legalize and regulate online gambling, including poker, within Mississippi state lines, and would have allowed gaming operators already holding licenses in the state to offer Internet wagering.

However, the bill failed to make its way through the Ways and Means committee and the Gaming committee on March 6, ending any hopes of the bill becoming a law.

Mississippi legalized gambling along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast in 1990 and has since approved the construction of 30 brick-and-mortar casinos in the state. Operators such as Caesars, Boyd Gaming and MGM Resorts, which already hold gaming licenses in the state, would have had the first crack at an online gaming space.

Mississippi was one of six states to consider an intrastate online gambling bill. Other states that have introduced measures include New Jersey, Iowa, Nevada, California and Hawaii. Nevada is the only state to approve online poker regulations and has received more than 20 license applications from potential service providers.

There is a Time and a Place for your Smart Phone ? I Don't Wear A ...

It?s the new form of antisocial behavior, people walking around texting like mad men! So what would you do if you are at a meeting and you get notified of a text or email.? Are you going to stop everything to check it out?? WRONG!? What is most important is right here, right now.

Actually, as noted in Bloomberg?s Businessweek, some folks are walking away from their Smart Phones and concentrating on tasks at hand with the people involved.? They are building relationships and companies the old fashion way, with people in real time, face-to-face.? The onslaught of social media, texting, tweeting, in addition to regular email and cell phone use has spurred the incidence of miscommunication, incivility and lack of just plain manners in dealing with people and situations in our daily lives.? We may communicate tremendously on facebook or twitter, but do we see the reaction our words are saying to those that read our comments?? Therein lies one of the problems.

Here are some tips to make the best of these new forms of communications and building relationships with your clients and peers.

  • If the issue is privacy in communication realize that??e-mail, faxes and telephone lines are not secure.? Many companies monitor conversations as ???? a matter of evaluating customer service and routinely tap into employees ???? e-mail, and who knows who sees the messages faxed at the machine down the ???? hall!
  • Anything you say on a social media site, or post online is a permanent record that can haunt you the rest of your life.? Be careful what you put on blogs, facebook, twitter, and in your emails.? Prospective employers, clients, and ???? others will see it.? Now with GPS,? you can also be located so be mindful of what you do with these?sites.? You don?t want anyone to know if you?re playing hookie!
  • Be sensitive to the technological sophistication of the individual that you?re dealing with.????Evaluate the means most employed by the other person and use that means as a way to communication.???Just ask them, ?What is the best way to contact you??? Don?t assume everyone texts.???Different strokes for different generations!
  • When confirming a meeting, try to do it by phone and either talk to that individual or to their assistant.? ?Otherwise?leave a voice message, e-mail, text or fax confirmation ? usually the?person will not get it in time. If they text you can text them.
  • Avoid trying to conduct new business with clients over voice mail, text, fax, or e-mail.? Face-to-face contact is essential.
  • Contact friends at their home e-mail address for?matters not related to business.
  • Avoid bringing cell phones and pagers to any kind of meeting i.e. new client, or job interview.???If you are in an interview and your cell phone goes off, you?ve ???? lost!
  • Limit cell phone use.???In most states, it is against the law to drive and be on your cell?in the car unless you have a hands-free device.? No??texting in the car, period.?
  • If you are with someone, do not email, or text?someone ELSE.
  • Avoid making or taking calls during meetings unless? it deals with the business at hand.
  • Inform customers of forthcoming faxes or e-mail? messages and follow up with a hard copy in the mail.
  • When developing communication with foreign companies,?evaluate their level of technological sophistication prior to sending messages via hi-tech vehicles.
  • When using a laptop or iPad in a presentation?remember the focus needs to be on the human factor.? The presentation on the laptop is meant??to enhance retention of the material since its employing more of the?prospect?s senses in comprehension of your message.
  • What about a letter of invitation over the?internet?? When it comes to using ???? the internet, there is a generational factor involved.? Some generations prefer a call or a hard??copy letter.? Others are satisfied?with correspondence over the internet.??Ask first so not as to lose the connection.? Also if it?s important material, send a?hard copy just for assurance measures.
  • Minimize of the use of palm pilots, Smart Phone, iPads, iPods, pagers, computers until after a client meeting.
  • What about a thank you note over the internet.? Again it?s a generational thing but people are still amazed when they receive a written thank you note.? It says that you took the extra time to write and send it.? But more and more people are satisfied with conducting all correspondence over the internet.? Check first.
  • A couple of things to remember.? Faxes and computers in the office are?for business only.? Anything?private should be handled at home.? With faxes coming in, everyone sees them and now there is software to tap into where you are surfing on company time.? Fair ? I can?t answer that, but employers today feel if you are using their equipment for private use on?their time, It?s wrong and grounds for a reprimand or termination.
  • When having a business lunch or dinner, turn the cell?phone off.? It is a distraction and?communicates that the person that you are with are not that important?which doesn?t say anything good about you.?Getting lots of calls doesn?t mean you?re important, it means that?you?re rude.
  • How about the phones that can take pictures and send?email?? Be ethical in its use and don?t intrude on someone?s privacy.???If you are going to take someone?s picture, ask them first
  • Face-to-face meetings are the best way to close a?deal.

3 Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Israeli airstrikes killed three Palestinians including a schoolboy in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, officials said, while Gaza rocket squads fired salvos into southern Israel, deepening the worst round of violence between the sides in more than a year.

The Israeli military said its aircraft targeted rocket launchers and a Gaza health official said the 12-year-old boy, a 60-year-old farm guard and a militant were killed as the exchanges of fire entered their third day and Egyptian efforts to achieve a cease-fire faltered.

"There is no room to talk about calm considering the continued Zionist aggression against Gaza," Khaled Batch, a leader of the Islamic Jihad militant faction in Gaza, told The Associated Press.

Gaza health official Adham Abu Salmia said the militant was killed at a rocket launching site in Gaza City. The boy was hit while walking with a friend to school in the northern city of Jebaliya and the guard died while walking with his dog, who was also killed, he added.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the dozen rockets launched from Gaza on Sunday caused no injuries or damage. The military claims more casualties were averted since the fighting began because Iron Dome missile defense batteries intercepted more than 90 percent of the rockets they targeted.

Israeli airstrikes have killed 16 Gazan militants and two civilians, and militants have fired more than 120 rockets at Israel, seriously wounding a civilian, since the fighting erupted on Friday with an Israeli air assault that killed the commander of a militant group.

Israel accused Zuhair al-Qaissi of plotting an infiltration attack into Israel from Egypt's lawless Sinai peninsula, similar to the one they claim he orchestrated in August, which killed eight Israelis. His militant group, the Hamas-allied Popular Resistance Committees, has never taken responsibility for that raid.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel remains prepared for a strike from the Sinai and pledged to deploy more Iron Dome missile defense batteries in the future.

"We exacted a heavy price and continue to exact it," Netanyahu said of the Israeli strikes on Gaza. "We will continue to overcome these terror threats."

Chief military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai said the army took into account the possibility that the assassination of al-Qaissi would touch off broader fighting when it launched the attack.

"We will continue to attack the terror cells that try to attack us," he told Israel Radio.

Some 1 million Israelis are within range of rocket fire from Gaza, and on Sunday, schools throughout the area and Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheva were closed because of the fighting. Rosenfeld said police stepped up their presence in southern Israel.

Israel and Gaza militants have frequently traded low-level fire since the 2009 war, but a flare-up of this intensity is rare. The United Nations and the U.S. State Department have condemned the violence and called on both sides to exercise restraint.

Gaza's militant Islamic Hamas rulers have denounced the Israeli airstrikes but their fighters have not attacked Israel, leaving that to other, smaller Palestinian militant groups.

Hamas has largely avoided direct attacks on Israel since the Jewish state conducted a bruising three-week war against the militant group in early 2009 that killed hundreds of Gazans and destroyed many Hamas facilities. But the Iranian-backed Hamas has been smuggling increasingly sophisticated weapons into the seaside territory and Israel holds it responsible for all violence emanating from Gaza.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Israel Radio on Sunday that there was no point in Israel's launching another large-scale offensive in Gaza unless it sets out to topple the Hamas regime. Lieberman wouldn't say whether such an operation was planned but noted that the violence from Gaza was "unacceptable and we won't reconcile ourselves to it."

Despite Lieberman's tough talk, neither side is believed to be interested in all-out war.

Egypt, which has helped arrange truces in the past, has been trying to arrange a cease-fire, but an official there said the Egyptians were encountering resistance from two militant groups, al-Qaissi's PRC and Islamic Jihad. Both factions want guarantees that Israel won't target their groups, he said, but that is something Egypt cannot deliver.

The Egyptian official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not at liberty to divulge details of cease-fire efforts.

Hamas officials also said they have been in touch with leaders in Qatar, Turkey and the Arab League in an effort to contain the violence.

Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian spokeswoman and senior Palestine Liberation Organization official, said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had also been touch with leaders in Gaza and Egypt to try to restore calm. Abbas has had little on-the-ground influence in Gaza since Hamas violently overran the territory in June 2007.

Syrian opposition rejects talks with regime

BEIRUT (AP) ? A high-profile international mission to end the Syrian crisis stumbled Friday before it began as the opposition rejected calls by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan for dialogue with President Bashar Assad as pointless and out of touch after a year of violence.

The dispute exposes the widening gap between opposition leaders who say only military aid can stop Assad's regime, and Western powers who fear more weapons will exacerbate the conflict.

As the prospects for diplomacy faltered, Turkey reported the defections of three high-ranking military officers ? two generals and a colonel ? as well as two sergeants, a significant development because until now most army defectors have been low-level conscripts. A deputy oil minister also deserted Assad's regime this week, making him the highest-ranking civilian official to join the opposition.

The White House welcomed the reported defections as a sign the regime is cracking from within and that Assad will eventually fall.

Western and Arab powers are backing Annan's two-day trip to Syria, starting Saturday, when he is to meet with Assad. The former U.N. secretary-general ? now a special U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria ? has said he seeks to start a "political process" to end the crisis and warned against further militarization of a conflict that appears headed toward civil war.

"I hope that no one is thinking very seriously of using force in this situation," Annan said Thursday in Cairo. "I believe any further militarization would make the situation worse." He said he would present "realistic" solutions, but did not elaborate.

Opposition leaders and activists rejected Annan's plans Friday, saying they ignore the nature of Assad's authoritarian regime as well as the thousands killed by security forces, many while peacefully calling for political reform.

By phone from Paris, the head of the Syrian National Council told The Associated Press that Annan was overlooking what the opposition considers the root of the problem: The regime's use of overwhelming military force to crush dissent.

"Any political solution will not succeed if it is not accompanied by military pressure on the regime," said Burhan Ghalioun. "As an international envoy, we hope (Annan) will have a mechanism for ending the violence."

The Syrian National Council has called for foreign military intervention, believing it is the only way to stop Assad's tanks and soldiers from firing on civilian areas. It recently formed a military office to try to coordinate efforts to bring in military aid for armed groups across the country who fight under the name of the Free Syrian Army.

Ghalioun said he worried Annan's trip would stall more effective steps to stop the violence.

"My fear is that, like other international envoys before him, the aim is to waste a month or two of pointless mediation efforts," he said.

Activists in Syria also said it was too late to talk.

"If the popular leaders inside Syria have decided that there can be no dialogue with the killer who is attacking us with tanks and rockets, how can he call for dialogue?" said an activist from the central city of Homs, who gave his name only as Abu Bakr for fear his family would be targeted. "You can't negotiate with someone who has a gun to your head."

Annan's visit marks a new international push for peace nearly a year after protesters took to the streets to demand Assad's ouster, inspired by Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. Since then, the regime has dispatched snipers, tanks and civilian gunmen to crush dissent. As the death toll mounted, protests have spread, and some have taken up arms to defend themselves and attack government forces.

The conflict is now one of the bloodiest of the Arab Spring, with the U.N. saying more than 7,500 people have been killed. Activists put the number at more than 8,000.

So far, Western powers have declined to intervene. Unlike in Libya, where a U.N.-sanctioned bombing campaign helped rebels topple Moammar Gadhafi last year, Syria has key allies in Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and shares a border with the region's closest American ally, Israel. Outright war in Syria could spark a regional conflagration.

On Friday, the U.N. humanitarian chief said the Syrian government had agreed to a joint mission to assess the country's humanitarian needs ? a rare concession by a regime that restricts work by outside groups.

Speaking in Turkey, Valerie Amos said the mission would be the first step toward setting up a longer-term system "which allows humanitarian organizations unhindered access to evacuate the wounded and deliver desperately needed supplies."

She said she was waiting for the Syrian government's response to a proposed plan.

Despite growing international condemnation, Assad's regime has remained largely intact. The report of military defections on Thursday was a notable development because of their high ranks and because it came a day after a deputy oil minister turned against Assad.

The White House said the developments were encouraging.

"If the reports are true, it's certainly a sign that there are significant cracks in the Assad regime," and lend weight to the U.S. view that Assad will fall, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. The defections "are a courageous step by members of the regime demonstrating their loyalty to and support for the Syrian people and their aspirations."

Still, U.S. intelligence officials said the defections were not from Assad's inner circle and there were no indications of the broader Syrian elite abandoning support for him, the best indication of a weakening of his regime. Signs of a worsening economy could be the biggest threat to Assad's stability, with food prices doubling, refined fuel growing scarce and unemployment rising.

The defecting military officers were among more than 200 Syrians who have fled to refugee camps in Turkey since Thursday as the Syrian government appears to gear up for an assault on opposition areas in Idlib province along the border.

Reinforcements have been pouring into Idlib for days, including dozens of tanks and armored personnel carriers.

"Many people are fleeing the area, fearing military operations," said Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Much of the buildup was in the mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region and the town of Saraqeb.

The Observatory said 54 people were killed across Syria on Friday, almost half of them during government raids of villages in Idlib.

Ten people were killed by gun and mortar fire in Homs, and security forces shot dead others around the country during protests, the group said. Five more bodies were found in Homs' Baba Amr neighborhood, which the government seized from rebels last week after weeks of siege and shelling.

Protesters took to the streets Friday to call on the Kurdish minority to join the uprising.

Kurds are Syria's largest ethnic minority, making up 15 percent of the country's 23 million people, and have long complained of neglect and discrimination. They have not joined anti-government protests in great numbers, but Assad apparently feared they would. Last year he granted citizenship to 250,000 Kurds who had been registered as aliens and barred from voting, owning property, attending state schools and holding government jobs.

(AP) ? Cheryl and Jim Friedman, retirees in St. Louis, had two-thirds of their retirement money in the stock market in 2008. When the financial crisis struck that fall and stocks lurched up and down with nauseating speed, Cheryl, a former accountant, pulled the money out.

Fearing that the next crisis was always around the corner, they have kept most of the money out. It's parked in a money-market account earning a meager 0.1 percent per year. The Friedmans watched in agony as stock prices doubled over the past three years.

"I have a whole lot of money sitting on the sidelines, because I'm afraid," she says. "The little guy is thinking, 'Well, things are good again now, I'll get back in.' And that's when they pull the rug out from under you."

Three years ago Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average closed at 6,547, its low during the Great Recession. Retirement accounts across the country had been devastated since October 2007, when the Dow hit a record of 14,164.

Last week, the Dow closed above 13,000, although it has fallen back slightly. It has been one of the greatest three-year runs in the history of the stock market, exceeded only by the dot-com stock craze of the late 1990s and the recovery from the Depression.

Some people gritted their teeth through the steep losses and poured more money into stocks while the market was still in free fall. That daring paid off in the returns of a lifetime.

"I felt that either the world's going to end or it's the smartest time ever to invest," recalls Harvey Bookman, 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who has made up his initial market losses many times over by buying when stock prices were low.

Bookman bought shares of Avis stock for 41 cents apiece on March 4, 2009, five days before the bottom. He sold them in September 2009 for $11.92 apiece. Total profit, minus commission: $46,026.

For many more, however, even a doubling of the market has not been enough to get them back in. The scars of the 2008 crash, when the Dow lurched up or down by 500 points or more in a day and people asked aloud whether the economy itself would survive, are that deep.

Since the March 2009 low, there have been only two months in which individual investors put more money into stock mutual funds than they took out, according to EPFR Global, which tracks funds.

The fuel for the market's ride higher since 2009 has come from big institutional investors instead.

For small investors, there have been more than enough reasons to sit out. After the 2008 crash, there was the "flash crash" of May 6, 2010, when a large trade overwhelmed computer serves and the Dow plunged to a loss of almost 1,000 points in minutes.

In just the past year, the European financial crisis, a downgrade of the United States credit rating, fear of a default by the U.S. government, high gas prices and supply disruptions from the Japanese tsunami have all whipsawed the stock market.

"It doesn't feel like we've doubled over the last three years," says Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. "The S&P's gains were masked by all the turbulence. That's probably why so many individual investors are sitting it out."

Joe Kelly, a financial planner in Bordentown, N.J., said one of his clients, an office manager in her 50s, yanked all $200,000 of her savings out of stocks and into cash one night in January 2009, against his advice.

Temporary peace of mind turned to angst as she missed a historic rally.

"She's crying," Kelly says. "She's lost so much money."

People who had the intestinal fortitude to sit tight during the crash have reaped three years of rewards. 401(k) account holdings have mostly recovered. And contributions at every paycheck during the market bottom bought shares of stock at bargain prices.

It's been harder for retirees who don't have big savings and have less time to recover from severe downturns.

"People in retirement are having a heck of a time dealing with this volatility," says Paul Jarvis, a financial planner in Fargo, N.D., who has spent extra time calming the fears of older clients. "They're trying to psychologically get a grip on how it affects them."

They also have few appealing alternatives to stocks if they want to earn decent income on their savings. The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates low since 2008, first by cutting short-term rates and then by buying Treasury bonds, which have reduced long-term rates.

Those moves left investors a choice of taking more risk with their money in the stock market or settling for near-zero returns on money-market funds and bank savings accounts, and not much better on certificates of deposit.

Those who have the stomach to stay in stocks may have reaped rewards, but they will never forget the ride.

Jay Sachs of New York recalls thinking about putting his savings under a mattress when the Dow plunged 777 points on one day in September 2008. By the following March, with daily declines continuing, he was still "scared out of my mind."

But Sachs, a retired computer consultant, soon tiptoed back into the market, buying dividend-paying blue chips and some mutual funds three years ago. Today his portfolio is well above where it was before the crisis began.

But his optimism is muted because of what he endured in 2008.

"The fact that there's still some fear out there is probably a good thing," he says. "Because when everyone is euphoric, you'd better start trimming your sails."

Bookman of Brooklyn, a retired software executive, is an investing enthusiast who made more than 1,700 trades through his Scottrade account last year. He prides himself on keeping emotion out of his investing.

That strategy was severely tested when he lost 70 percent of his holdings in eight months during the crisis. But he kept going, remembering the advice of Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor: Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.

"I just kept buying because I had waited for this time my whole life," he says. "I had heard about the Depression when anybody who had bought at the bottom made a fortune."

Even investors who put their faith, and their money, in the market during its darkest days have muted expectations for stocks in the near future. Expecting a pullback in stocks, Bookman has sold 30 percent of his holdings in the last two months.

"I just think that people right now are too complacent," he says. "I hear about all the problems with Europe and the economy, and a lot of people are out of work, so I don't think things are so good. The market is way up, but the world hasn't changed so much."

Financial experts say the experience of surviving 2008 may embolden investors the next time there's a market shock.

"When we have these downdrafts, they're a good reminder of volatility and a good opportunity to load up on stocks when they're cheap," says James Angel, associate professor of finance at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business.

Small investors like Doug Heuring, 40, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., vow to be ready for the next crisis. Heuring, a medical technologist, snatched up some biotechnology stocks "when the market was on sale."

His portfolio is 30 percent or more above where it stood when the crisis hit. He knows he could have done even better had he been bolder. But at least he didn't flinch when the market tanked.

"You've got to stay the course," he says. "A lot of people panic when their stocks hit lows, but if they're good companies, they will come back."

That is not so easy for Cheryl Friedman, the St. Louis retiree. She sits in her office and watches market chatter on CNBC all day, waiting for the appropriate time to get back into the market. But the timing never seems right. Not when the crisis was fresh, and not now, when stocks are up more than 20 percent since early October.

"It's very difficult to know what to do," says Friedman, 63. "I should have just sat back and waited. But when you're at this point in life and there's no way to replace your assets, you can't afford the risk."

NASA to launch 5 rockets quickly to track winds

NORFOLK, Virginia (AP) ? NASA will be launching a series of rockets to learn more about the little-understood jet stream winds that circle the Earth at the edge of space.

On a clear night between March 14 and April 4, NASA plans to launch five rockets in five minutes from its Wallops Island facility in coastal Virginia.

Each rocket will release a chemical leaving a long, milky-white cloud to track the winds that scientists will monitor from cameras on the coasts of North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey.

The clouds should be visible to the human eye along much of the Eastern seaboard.

"People will be able to see it. They can also photograph it pretty easily," said Miguel Larsen, a Clemson University professor who is the mission's principal investigator.

The small sounding rockets that usually carry a payload to space and them come back to Earth will crash into the Atlantic Ocean, where they will become artificial reefs. NASA said the experiment will cost about $4 million.

Each rocket will be fired different altitudes and distances, with the rocket going the longest distance crashing about halfway to Bermuda.

Firing multiple rockets allows scientists to track the high-speed winds over hundreds of miles.

The winds in the thermosphere about 65 miles (105 kilometers) above the surface can reach speeds up to 300 miles per hour (480 kph). Larson said scientists aren't sure why there are such high winds at that altitude and the experiment will help address that question.

That altitude is also part of the ionosphere, where there are strong electrical currents from solar radiation. Data gathered from the experiment should allow scientists to better model the electromagnetic regions of space that can damage satellites and affect radio communications. Scientists also hope the experiment will help explain how atmospheric disturbances in one part of the globe can be transported to other parts of the globe in a day or two.

They aren't the same jet stream currents that circle closer to earth, affecting weather patterns and air travel.

3 Budgeting Tips Everyone Can Use - Investment - Financial Press

For most people thinking about money feels really unpleasant so even though budgeting tips can help them, most people will resist them. For example, most people think that budgeting forces them to go without the simple pleasures in life. It doesn?t have to be this way, as very often you can save money by making adjustments and improvements in creative ways that actually improve your life. Below are some budgeting tips that can help you improve your financial circumstances if you follow them. Also, in case you?re interested, you should seriously have a look at Gold Money, it?s a safe and secure way to buy silver and gold on the Internet. Read these GoldMoney reviews for more info.

When you operate with a budget no matter if it is on a computer or on paper, you should divide up the money you spend into categories. While the categories you choose will depend entirely upon your lifestyle and individual needs, starting with shelter, sustenance, utilities and entertainment is best. One way that people do this is to divide up their money into envelopes with the proper labels and then just use the money contained in the envelopes as it is needed. However, it?s important to stick to your budget and not use money from one envelope for another type of expense. This will allow you to manage your household budget each month. Cars and other vehicles can chew up a huge portion of your monthly budget. The first thing you need to ask yourself about is if your own car is economically relative to what you need and what you can afford. Trading in your current vehicle for something that is reliable and cheaper is a good way to take care of this problem. If you live in a home that has two or more cars, can you get rid of one and get by on the other? Finally, look at your automobile insurance plan and make sure you aren?t paying more than you have to.

One thing you can do to make it easier to budget is to reduce at least one bad habit for every member of your household. Lots of habits, like eating poorly, drinking and smoking can be costly for your budget. Aside from this, some people spend money on lottery tickets, bingo or trips to the casino, which is seldom good for your budget. It is good to cut back on the amount of money you spend on these things; if you cannot control yourself around these substances or activities, you should seek some help. You don?t have to be perfect, but if you buy this type of product regularly, it can really drain your budget, and not do you much good in return. Why not kill two birds with one stone by stopping the money sucking habits? In conclusion, there are plenty of things you can do to better budget your finances. Sometimes it may seem like a sacrifice to cut back in areas where you?re used to spending freely, but very often you can quickly adjust to being more frugal. In many cases, the extra money you spend on something like a latte is mainly a habit, and if you make your coffee at home or at the office instead you won?t feel deprived after a couple of days. The budgeting tips we?ve talked about in this article can help you live well within your means and take better care of your finances. Lastly, don?t forget to check out this article about James Turk.

Super Tuesday: Churches that embrace Santorum, Gingrich drive youth away

In a sleepy town 30 miles north of Atlanta, former Sen. Rick Santorum stands behind the pulpit of an evangelical church to deliver a hard-hitting speech on religious liberty and conservative values. His rousing delivery Feb. 19 convinced more than a few attendees. ?He sealed the deal,? a 58-year-old retired secretary told The Washington Post.

One week later, Newt Gingrich would stand on the same sacred stage to lecture congregants on how America?s ?secular left? wars against religious persons. The thrice-married former speaker of the House nurtured no illusions regarding his own sanctification. ?I don?t come here as a saint,? Mr. Gingrich said. ?I come here as a citizen who has had a life that at times has fallen short of the glory of God who has had to seek God?s forgiveness and had to seek reconciliation.?

Though both presidential hopefuls are Roman Catholic, they have made regular campaign stops at evangelical churches. Their presence is often met with raucous applause. But as it turns out, such displays of partisan faith are partly responsible for the recent mass exodus of young people from Christian churches.

RELATED:?5 standards for presidential leadership

Religious pollsters and demographers have long warned that young people were leaving churches in alarming numbers. According to a much talked about LifeWay Research survey, for example, 7 in 10 Protestants ages 18 to 30 who regularly attended church during high school said they quit attending by age 23. What?s been less clear is why they?re leaving.

But according to Notre Dame professor David Campbell and Harvard professor Robert Putnam, the fusion of faith and partisan politics ? particularly the conservative type ? is at least partly to blame.

?The best evidence indicates that this dramatic generational shift is primarily in reaction to the religious right,? they wrote in the latest Foreign Affairs in an essay titled ?God and Caesar in America: Why Mixing Religion and Politics is Bad for Both.??They explain: "And Millennials are even more sensitive to it, partly because many of them are liberal (especially on the touchstone issue of gay rights) and partly because they have only known a world in which religion and the right are intertwined.?

THE MONITOR'S VIEW:?Pastors who play politics from the pulpit?

Mr. Putnam and Mr. Campbell point to the statistical growth of ?nones,? those persons who claim no religious affiliation. This group has historically comprised between 5 and 7 percent of the American population. In the aftermath of the religious right movement in the 1990s, however, the percentage began rising. In the mid-1990s, it reached 12 percent. By 2011, it was at 19 percent. Between 2006 and 2011, the rise in young people aged 18-29 who reported never attending religious services was three times higher than the increase among those over the age of 60.

?In effect, Americans (especially young Americans) who might otherwise attend religious services are saying, ?Well, if religion is just about conservative politics, then I?m outta here,?? Putnam and Campbell write.

Many religious leaders see the writing on the wall. As a result, there has been a drop-off in political activity among US religious congregations in recent years. But not among all of them.

OPINION:?Millennial Generation challenges religion in America

Some churches still drape flags over crosses, boldly endorse political candidates, or pass out voter guides. Partisan expressions of Christianity live on among a shrinking cohort of Americans, as Mr. Santorum and Mr. Gingrich can attest. But Christian leaders need to understand that if they continue to push partisan politics on their congregants, they may end up literally preaching to the choir.

LED Lights In Los Angeles Seemingly Bring Both Bad And Good ...

by Home on Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 | Comments Off

News of using far more LED lights in Los Angeles, California was accepted warmly by the public back in 2009, when it started out updating the 140,000 pre-existing streetlight lighting fixtures with the energy-saving LEDs. This was the major street lighting update ever conducted by a city.

The retrofitting could possibly operate for 3 more years. By then, LA can have saved electrical power by at least 40% and lowered carbon pollutions by 40,500 tons annually. The move was confirmed in the busy city by no less than former President Bill Clinton. The previous President leads the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), the same office that also projected that the said decline of carbon emissions is equal to taking 6,700 cars or trucks off the highway each year. The project is actually a mutual committed work by the CCI and the Los Angeles? Bureau of Street Lighting.

Once all the bulbs are replaced, in 7 years, the undertaking preserves the city $48 million and decrease its carbon emissions by 197,000 tons. LA will continue to save $10 million yearly after the first 7 years mainly because LEDs is long lasting and require little or no upkeep.

While the basic streetlamps work for barely 4 to 6 years, LED accessories have a more lengthened expected life. They can last 10 to 12 years prior to when the diodes slowly and eventually dim. Also, the new LED streetlights, that contain white-light LEDs, are usually often proves to be more sturdy and resistant to harm than other technologies.

They can likewise help reduce sky beam, which is the expected luminosity of the night sky. President Clinton even told, ?If you have been to Death Valley National Park and researched on very clear night, you would observe that the stars look like dimmer than they were when you?re a child?. In fact, he claims, the stars are not getting dimmer. It?s just that the rest of the sky is becoming brighter because of the rising LED lights in Los Angeles, California as well as in nearby Las Vegas.

This essentially has made LED lights adorable. But not as emphasized by Los Angeles-based mega-rave event coordinator, Insomniac Events. The embattled promoter has just publicized that it?s forbidding bright LED lights from its organized parties. The group worries that LED lights present a negative concept of their parties when music admirers sit or lay on to the ground gazing at the designs.

Insomniac runs the Electric Daisy Carnival, a summer electronic dance celebration. The occasion has always been held for 16 years direct but last year, it got into a scandal after a 15-year-old attendee subsequently succumbed to an ecstasy overdose. Last year?s event also observed a fiercely frantic crowd, with approximately 60 mostly drug-related arrests conducted and numerous medical catastrophes.
