ROYAL OAK (CBS Detroit) Lung cancer is a growing health problem, with 1,625 men and women in metro Detroit receiving a lung cancer diagnosis from Beaumont Health System just in the past three years. And now those people will have another source of help.
The Cunnington Family Comprehensive Lung Cancer Center just opened at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, providing a place where patients and a multidisciplinary clinical team of surgical, medical and radiation oncologists can come together to develop a plan of care.
?This new facility will provide a dedicated multidisciplinary space for the diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up care of our patients with lung cancer,? says Robert Welsh, M.D., vice chief of Surgical Services and chief of Thoracic Surgery. ?Together as a team, we can fight the battle and win lives, patient by patient.?
The Comprehensive Lung Cancer Center was made possible by a very generous gift to Beaumont Health System from Bloomfield Hills business people Laurie and Tom Cunnington.
According to the National Institutes of Health, more people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, regardless of gender.
In 2012, more than 226,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. The good news is that with accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many people diagnosed with lung cancer live long, healthy lives.
Located on the second floor of the Rose Cancer Center, the 955-square-foot Comprehensive Lung Cancer Center features a reception area, three examination rooms, a conference room and an office. Opening on Dec. 3, the center brings patients with lung cancer into an environment where they will receive timely, compassionate and appropriate care, empowering them to fully understand their condition and treatment plan.
In addition to offering superior clinical care, the team will work collaboratively to address the psychosocial, physical and emotional needs that patients face with lung cancer. This team-focused approach ensures that the clinical plan is customized and tailored for each patient, so that they receive the ideal combination of treatments and therapies.
