(AP) ? A former chief executive of National Lampoon and two co-conspirators face possible life sentences Friday after being convicted of swindling investors out of about $200 million.

U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson is set to sentence Timothy Durham, James Cochran and Rick Snow following their June convictions on fraud and conspiracy charges.

A jury found each man guilty of securities fraud and conspiracy. It also convicted Durham, a major Indiana Republican Party donor who resigned his National Lampoon post in January, of 10 counts of wire fraud, while Cochran and Snow were convicted on some of those counts.

Prosecutors have said the three stripped Akron, Ohio-based Fair Finance of its assets and used the money to buy mansions, classic cars and other luxury items and to keep another Durham company afloat. The men were convicted of operating an elaborate Ponzi scheme to hide the company's depleted condition from regulators and investors, many of whom were elderly.

Durham's attorney, John Tompkins, argued at trial that Durham and the others were caught off-guard by the economic crisis of 2008, and bewildered when regulators placed them under more strict scrutiny and investors made a run on the company.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett said none of the three has shown remorse for their crimes and each deserves the life sentence recommended in a probation report.

"The emails and wiretaps introduced at trial show a brazen disregard ? indeed contempt ? for the largely working-class people that made up the majority of Fair's investors," Hogsett said in a sentencing memorandum submitted earlier this week.

"Durham has earned a place among the greediest, most selfish and remorseless of criminals," Hogsett wrote.

However, Snow's attorney, Jeffrey Baldwin, in his sentencing memo this week, pointed out that former Enron Corp. CEO Jeffrey Skilling was sentenced to less than 25 years in prison after his convictions on 29 counts of fraud and conspiracy and that former WorldCom Inc. CEO Bernard Ebbers was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of nine felonies including securities fraud in a loss of more than $1 billion.

Attorneys for Baldwin and Cochran have asked for lower sentences than those recommended.

Tompkins has asked that Durham be sentenced to three years in prison and two years of home detention.

The charges against Durham led several GOP politicians, including Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, to return hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions sought by Fair Finance's bankruptcy trustee.

(AP) ? CNN on Thursday named former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker as its new top executive, searching for a way to turn around the original cable news network as it has lagged behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC.

Zucker will start in January, based in New York and reporting to Phil Kent, who runs all of the Turner networks for parent company Time Warner.

"I spent the most rewarding years of my career as a journalist, and it's where I look forward to spending many more," said Zucker, who shot to fame as the executive producer of NBC's "Today" show at the start of its morning dynasty in the 1990s.

Zucker moved on to Hollywood as NBC's entertainment president, where he was less successful. He became head of NBC Universal, and while he couldn't turn around NBC, achieved great financial success for the company by overseeing its highly profitable cable networks.

One of them was MSNBC, which has become more successful by appealing to a partisan audience, following the model of the market leader at Fox News Channel. CNN has steadfastly maintained a non-biased approach and its biggest issue has been the same as it has been for two decades: how to get an audience to stay with the network when there is not a big news story dominating the public's attention.

While a great deal of attention has been paid to CNN's problems in prime time for its domestic network, Zucker will command a much larger and more successful portfolio, including HLN, CNN International and the CNN.com website. A CNN product is in televisions on some 265 million homes across the world.

Zucker has been seen as the lead candidate for the job since his predecessor, Jim Walton, announced in the summer he was leaving. Zucker has spent the past year helping Katie Couric put her talk show on the air.

"Jeff's experience as a news executive is unmatched for its breadth and success," Kent said. "He built and sustained the number-one brand in morning news, and under his watch NBC's signature news programming set a standard for quality and professionalism."

Tom Johnson, president of CNN during the 1990s, said it was a "splendid choice."

"I would hope it would be a return to CNN where news trumps all programming so CNN gets back to its basics of being a breaking news network," Johnson said.

Obama must offer a 'grand deal' with Iran on its nuclear program

For Iran, the nuclear crisis has become the most important national security and foreign policy challenge since the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

The country may not be losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians to a hot war. But it is enduring the most severe sanctions in its history, foreign assassinations of its scientists, and international pressure that has shaken the foundation of its relations regionally, and with Western and Eastern powers. It would not be unrealistic to conclude that Iran has already paid the price for a nuclear bomb.

ONE MINUTE DEBATE: 3 views on what the US should do about Iran's nuclear program

And yet Iran has not relinquished its uranium enrichment rights under the Non Proliferation Treaty, and instead has become more resolute and defiant. Today it has about 10,000 nuclear centrifuges and has mastered uranium enrichment to the 20-percent grade level ? defying the UN Security Council and the West by bringing its enrichment capacity to a ?point of no return.?

With both sides scoring such high points, this duel could be interpreted as a win-win game, with the West squeezing Iran as never before and Iran?s nuclear program continuing on. I would suggest, however, it is really a lose-lose one, with a trajectory headed toward a violent endgame. This, though, can be avoided with a grand deal.

It?s encouraging that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently stated that the now politicized dispute over Iran?s nuclear program should be resolved by direct talks between Iran and the United States. This is a major shift in the Iranian president?s understanding.

When I visited Mr. Ahmadinejad in 2005 as a possible candidate to work for the foreign ministry, we discussed Iran-US relations and the role of the US on the nuclear file. At that time, he disagreed with my recommendation to bolster dialogue with the West ? including the US ? to resolve the nuclear dilemma. He saw enrichment as a technical, legal issue, a legitimate right for Iran under the Non Proliferation Treaty. I cautioned that for the West, it is neither a legal nor technical issue issue, but a political one, which requires direct talks with the US to be resolved.

Whether his recent comments are a matter of consensus within Iran, however, remains a big question.

Another question is whether President Obama will be able to orchestrate a ?real engagement? with Iran ? in contrast to his first term where he applied devastating unilateral and international sanctions, pressure, covert operations, and an intelligence war. Those measures only contributed to further tensions and a thickening of the wall of mistrust between the two nations ? wiping any chance of rapprochement off the political map.

ANOTHER VIEW: Five reasons to attack Iran

The Obama administration needs a new engagement policy with Iran that brings an end to 33 years of a failed ?diplomacy plus pressure? policy dubbed as ?dual-track.? The Iranian leadership values actions over words ? particularly since Mr. Obama?s pleasantries have coincided with the most draconian sanctions and measures applied on Iran.

In the second term, it is time for the Obama administration to offer Iran a ?grand deal,? where dual-track diplomacy is supported by constructive actions to prove his sincerity. Such a strategy needs to be drafted and implemented wisely, in both substance and style, to prevent previous failures and bring a real change to US-Iran relations. It also requires Iran to accommodate such policy by taking appropriate steps to facilitate the trend.

I cannot agree more with Obama when days after his reelection he said: ?There should be a way in which they [Iran] can enjoy peaceful nuclear power while still meeting their international obligations and providing clear assurances to the international community that they?re not pursuing a nuclear weapon.? The following is a roadmap to realize that goal:

The negotiating countries known as P5+1 and Iran have two immediate ways to cool down tensions and warmongering: 1) Iran can agree to halt 20-percent enrichment and cap it at 5 percent in return for partial removal of sanctions ? such as European unilateral sanctions on Iranian oil and Iran?s central bank; or 2) the P5+1 can get more inspections, taking advantage of Iranian legislation passed by the parliament that permits the government to implement ?Additional Protocol? inspections and safeguards in return for the West recognizing Iran?s legitimate right to enrichment.

If Iran and the P5+1 agreed to this second option, that would greatly ease the resolution of outstanding technical issues between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran.

A next step should be a realistic, comprehensive package for solving the nuclear standoff.

Such a package should ensure Iran?s maximum level of transparency and cooperation with the IAEA and guarantee ?no breakout? in Iran?s nuclear program. The P5+1 should reciprocate by recognizing Iran?s right to enrichment under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and gradually lift sanctions.

Simultaneously, direct talks between Iran and the US on broader issues are essential. Rapprochement will be possible only if, for the duration of engagement policy, the US dual-track policy ceases and hostile actions, sanctions, and other forms of coercive pressures are put on hold. And Tehran and Washington must also agree on a comprehensive agenda for reconciliation. That agenda must include all bilateral, regional, and international issues ? demonstrating the ?entire game plan? while implementing it in phases.

For instance, Iran and the US could first cooperate on Afghanistan to build trust, then move on to the Syria crisis by organizing a free election supervised by the international community.

Helpful, too, would be for both sides to dial back the language of threats and heated rhetoric and to convince political factions in both countries to support the talks ? at least temporarily ? while negotiations continue. Tehran and Washington will need to recognize their respective spoilers at home and abroad, and be determined to prevent them from obstructing and derailing rapprochement efforts.

OPINION: 4 ways US and Iran can make nuclear talks work

The alternative to engagement will be catastrophic to international peace and security. The continuation of the economic and covert war against Iran would further radicalize its behavior and shrink the maneuverability of Iranian decisionmakers to compromise. Ultimately the US would be forced to enter a third war in the Middle East ? one that would be disastrous for the US, Iran, the region, and beyond. Therefore diplomatic progress is a must, not a choice.

Sony unveils price, footage for PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CinaAlta 4K camcorders

Looking for a hearty new camera rig to spice up your next indie film? Start saving: Sony finally went live with pricing for its PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 CineAlta PL-mount cameras. Following an LA screening of professionally shot 4K and HD footage, Sony mentioned that the high-end camcorders can be had for $34,900 and $19,400, respectively. The steeper priced PMW-F55 has a sharper edge, of course, and can natively shoot 4K, 2K or HD footage through a global shutter. The (comparatively) less expensive F5 can handle 4K video too, but needs the help of the AXS-R5 RAW recorder (a $6,300 add-on) to pull it off -- it also has a narrower color gamut and a rolling shutter. Roll on past the break for a full list of prices and accessories.

(AP) ? That didn't take long.

The fissures within the Republican Party that some say cost the GOP control of the Senate have resurfaced just three weeks after the election. This time conservatives are targeting a popular veteran congresswoman from a storied West Virginia political family making a bid for Democrat Jay Rockefeller's Senate seat in 2014.

Within an hour of Shelley Moore Capito's announcement of her candidacy, the influential and conservative Club for Growth branded her as the "establishment candidate" whose record in Congress of supporting prominent bailouts has led to bigger government. Capito just won her seventh term to Congress, securing about 70 percent of her district's vote. Her father, former Gov. Arch Moore, for years was the chief political rival of the man she hopes to replace in the Senate.

The new head of the Senate's GOP campaign arm, Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, dismissed the criticism from the right ? "I don't see this as damaging to her cause" ? but it's far from inconsequential in the Republicans' bid to retake the Senate.

Moran hasn't officially taken over as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee yet, but he already finds himself defending a potential nominee who's widely popular in her state while trying to avoid alienating influential players on the party's right flank.

Downplaying the impact of the Club for Growth's criticism of Capito, Moran said Tuesday his committee hasn't made a decision on how heavily involved it will be in West Virginia's Republican Senate primary two years from now.

"Shelley Moore Capito is a known quantity in West Virginia," he said. "Her voting record is acceptable to the majority of West Virginians in her district for a long period of time. I don't see this as damaging to her cause."

Rockefeller, 75, has not said whether he'll seek a sixth term in the Senate, but Capito has the name recognition and fundraising ability to mount an effective campaign against an incumbent.

The Club for Growth wasted no time listing what it believes are her numerous faults. They likened her to candidates such as Rick Berg of North Dakota and Rep. Denny Rehberg of Montana, saying that while they were supposedly the most electable of the Republican candidates, they lost Senate races in Republican-leaning states.

"Her candidacy will undoubtedly be cheered by the GOP establishment, and dire warnings will be issued against any 'divisive' primary challenges, lest other candidates hurt Capito's chances of winning," said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. "The problem is that Congresswoman Capito's record looks a whole lot like the establishment candidates who lost this year."

But many of the Club for Growth's candidates in recent elections also have stumbled badly. Richard Mourdock lost in Indiana after bouncing veteran Sen. Richard Lugar in the primary. In the 2010 elections, the organization threw its considerable financial backing behind Sharron Angle in Nevada and Ken Buck in Colorado, both losers to vulnerable Democratic incumbents.

Moran said the criticism of Capito from the Club for Growth was not unexpected.

"This is going to be decided not by the NRSC and not by the Club for Growth; it's going to be decided by the people of West Virginia," he said.

In the last election cycle, Democratic leaders in Washington didn't mind playing favorites during the primaries, heavily recruiting candidates they thought had the best chance of winning, while shunning some they did not see as formidable. GOP leaders, in contrast, sat back as their potential nominees fought it out.

Moran said figuring out the NRSC's role in the coming primaries will take a couple of months, and said his organization will play a role in some states.

"It's a state-by-state issue," he said.

Democratic officials, meanwhile, are enjoying the sideshow of a potential GOP split already in the works.

"Their argument is correct that the handpicked Republican establishment candidates did just as poorly as the more tea-party candidates," said Matt Canter, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "It's hard to argue with them in that respect."

Canter said the establishment candidates stumbled in part because of their efforts to appeal to tea party supporters and strong anti-government organizations such as the Club for Growth. He said an outsider might find it easy to defeat Capito, because GOP primaries in West Virginia typically do not attract a lot of voters.

"It would be very easy for a right-wing candidate to get the votes needed to win," Canter said.

Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said he would have preferred for the Club for Growth to have waited to see if a viable alternative to Capito emerges before attacking her. With Mitt Romney easily winning the state, Republicans figure to have a strong shot of winning the Senate seat in 2014.

"She's the best that state has to offer at this point," Bonjean said. "There's not a deep bench of Republican candidates who can immediately step into the fold, who can take on Sen. Rockefeller. Going after a female Republican right now when we lost the women's vote is not necessarily the wisest political move either."

Chocola said supporting fiscal conservatives such as Jeff Flake in Arizona and Ted Cruz in Texas, both Senate winners this month, is the best way back for the GOP.

"They are the future of the Republican Party," he said.

Nanotech 'second skin' could protect soldiers from chemical threats

21 hrs.

Advances in nanotech have allowed research into materials that actively detect and shut out harmful molecules, or even shed layers like real skin. It?could be a lifesaver for soldiers and emergency workers.

A soldier in the field has lots of protection: A helmet, flak jacket, armored panels and so on. But when it comes to chemical and biological warfare, that equipment is virtually useless. Gases and bacteria can penetrate or simply cling to soldier's garments and gear, wreaking havoc later despite being highly diffuse.

The risk can't be mitigated entirely, but polymer scientists at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are working on a "second skin" made of?smart materials that would be a far more effective and sophisticated defense than we have now.

They call the fabric they're working on a "hybrid functional material," and it's made of a combination of carbon nanotubes and specially?designed nanoparticles. It's designed not just to block out unwanted agents, like poisonous gas molecules and spores, but to be normally breathable as well in less dangerous situations.

At a molecular level, the nanotubes are aligned vertically and arranged to form pores just a few nanometers wide. While ordinary air can pass through these tiny "nanopores," larger molecules and organisms like viruses simply don't fit.

There are smaller threats, however: Nerve agents and mustard gas would go right through even such tiny gaps. The nanomaterial?membrane?would be coated with "responsive functional groups," special molecules designed to respond to the presence of such deadly toxins. Activated molecules would trigger the nanopores to shut completely.

Lastly, in the case of agents that tend to stick around instead of diffusing, such as anthrax, the material will be designed to slough them?off, mimicking human skin. That way a garment exposed to infection wouldn't bring it back to, or out of, a hospital or base.

The leader of the research team is LLNL's Franceso Fornasiero, who is working closely with UMA's Kenneth Carter and James Watkins and others. They've just received a $1.8 million five-year grant to research how to manufacture these nanomaterials in bulk, and they estimate that new nano-uniforms could be in the field within 10 years.

Woods not interested in European membership

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? Tiger Woods is more driven to catch Jack Nicklaus than to try to emulate Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy.

Woods made it clear Tuesday that he had no interest in taking up membership on the European Tour. He had floated the possibility last month in Turkey that he would look into dual membership with Europe counting the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup toward the minimum requirement of 13 events.

"I'll make it real simple ? I'm not going to play the European Tour next year," Woods said.

Woods is starting next season at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Throw in the four majors and four World Golf Championships, and he would need only three more events to become a European Tour member.

"It's a bit much for me still," Woods said, adding that his focus is squarely on the record 18 majors won by Nicklaus.

Donald last year became the first player to win the money title on the PGA Tour and European Tour in the same season. McIlroy matched that feat this year, even though three of his five wins were regular PGA Tour events.

On the strength of majors and WGC events, which are every bit part of the European Tour schedule as the PGA Tour schedule, Woods could have won both money title at least four times in the last decade if he had been a European Tour member and added a couple of events. Europe used to require only 11 events to be a member.

"Certainly, I've had opportunities over the years, especially when it was at 11 events," Woods said. "I was very close a couple times and could have taken membership up and played it. But still ... I enjoy playing around the world, and I still always will. But I am going to play this tour."

When asked why he never bothered becoming a dual member, Woods said, "It wasn't important to me."

"I think I could have won it a few times," he said of the money titles. "I don't know what that number was. But it just wasn't important to me. My main concern was winning major championships, and I've won 14 of them, and I'm very proud of that."

Asked whether adding a few European events would have detracted from his preparation for the majors, Woods nodded.

He remains stuck on 14 majors, winning his last one in 2008 in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Woods has failed to win the last 14 majors he has played, the longest drought of his career. Next year's rotation of majors include Merion for the U.S. Open, a course he has never seen, and Oak Hill for the PGA Championship, the only time Woods has played all four rounds at a PGA without breaking par.

Woods said winning a major makes it a great year, which in his mind means that four players had a great year ? Bubba Watson (Masters), Webb Simpson (U.S. Open), Ernie Els (British Open) and McIlroy (PGA Championship).

"That's something I haven't done since '08, so it's something I can do next year," he said. "I've won golf tournaments; I've had some really nice years, some really good years in there. But as I said, winning a major championship just takes it to a whole new level."

That doesn't make his year a total loss.

Woods played his most complete season since 2009, and the World Challenge that starts Thursday at Sherwood Country Club will be his 24th week of competition, which includes the Ryder Cup and an exhibition in Turkey.

The only stumble was at Doral, where he withdrew in the middle of the final round when his Achilles tendon flared up on him. He won in his next start, at Bay Hill, and then added wins at the Memorial and AT&T National.

"I've very excited because last year at this point in time I was still not quite where I wanted to be physically," he said. "I ended up having a little bit of a problem at Doral at the beginning of the year, but did the prudent thing in not playing at the end. This year has been fantastic in that regard. I've felt good. I've played a full schedule for the first time in a very long time, and just very pleased with what I've done overall with my game."

Do you have leaves in your gutters or money in your gutters?

It is always interesting to watch the power of advertising in action.

Today I want to talk about the advertizing used to support the various guard-guard systems that are available on the market.? Of course if you look at the promotional advertising from all of these companies they will each tell you exactly why they are the best.

In the field, as a Seattle Home Inspector, I get to see the ?truth? of these various claims.

On a recent inspection, one of the gutter-guard systems that advertises heavily around here (and that spends a lot of advertizing dollars ripping one of the other more famous gutter-guards) was clearly not functioning as advertised.

I think the idea of gutter-guard systems is a good one, as many people injure themselves in the terminal job of keeping gutters clean.? When I am inspecting homes I try to see which ones are functioning as advertized.? During times of heavy rains is the best time to see how well they are functioning.? As you can see in the following picture, this micro-filter type guard is completely clogged with algae and actually holding water to the point it is running over the edge.? Impact marks all around the home were consistent with this lack of proper function for some time.

Some gutter-guards work better than others

As you can see in the following video---water is freely running over the edge all along the edge of the gutter.

Another type of gutter-guard are ones that rely on a rolled edge at the front of the gutter.? The concept of the design of these gutters is that water follows the rolled edge by friction and drips off into the gutter while the leafs and light-weight debris fall by gravity past the face of the gutter.? Of course the screen-filter type cover company's advertizing states that this does not work.? Of the dozens of these roll-type gutters I have inspected, I have yet to see one that was clogged.? Now perhaps I have just been lucky---but I doubt it.

All the ones that attempt to filter the water across the top surface appear less functional over time than the roll type.

Gutter Helmet and Leaf-Guard are two of the most common roll-type guards I see in this area and I have yet to see one that was not functioning as advertised---but I am still looking.

I think the lesson here is to not always believe what you hear and make sure you verify what you hear.?? Otherwise it might be your money that is going down the gutter.

Smoking 'rots' brain, says study

Smoking "rots" the brain by damaging memory, learning and reasoning, according to researchers at King's College London.

A study of 8,800 people over 50 showed high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser extent.

Scientists involved said people needed to be aware that lifestyles could damage the mind as well as the body.

Their study was published in the journal Age and Ageing.

Researchers at King's were investigating links between the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain.

Data about the health and lifestyle of a group of over-50s was collected and brain tests, such as making participants learn new words or name as many animals as they could in a minute, were also performed.

They were all tested again after four and then eight years.

Decline

The results showed that the overall risk of a heart attack or stroke was "significantly associated with cognitive decline" with those at the highest risk showing the greatest decline.

It also said there was a "consistent association" between smoking and lower scores in the tests.

End Quote Dr Simon Ridley Alzheimer's Research UK

One of the researchers, Dr Alex Dregan, said: "Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.

"We have identified a number of risk factors which could be associated with accelerated cognitive decline, all of which, could be modifiable."

He added: "We need to make people aware of the need to do some lifestyle changes because of the risk of cognitive decline."

The researchers do not know how such a decline could affect people going about their daily life. They are also unsure whether the early drop in brain function could lead to conditions such as dementia.

Heart and brain

Dr Simon Ridley, from Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.

"Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors that are linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition.

"These results underline the importance of looking after your cardiovascular health from mid-life."

The Alzheimer's Society said: "We all know smoking, a high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a high BMI [Body Mass Index] is bad for our heart. This research adds to the huge amount of evidence that also suggests they can be bad for our head too.

"One in three people over 65 will develop dementia but there are things people can do to reduce their risk.

"Eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and not smoking can all make a difference."

Alzheimer's disease in mice alleviated: Promising therapeutic approach for humans

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Pathological changes typical of Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced in mice by blockade of an immune system transmitter. A research team from Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and the University of Zurich has just published a new therapeutic approach in fighting Alzheimer's disease in the current issue of Nature Medicine. This approach promises potential in prevention, as well as in cases where the disease has already set in.

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common causes of dementia. In Germany and Switzerland alone, around 1.5 million people are affected, and forecasts predict a doubling of the number of patients worldwide within the next 20 years. The accumulation of particular abnormal proteins, including amyloid-? (A?) among others, in patients' brains plays a central role in this disease. Prof. Frank Heppner from the Department of Neuropathology at Charit? and his colleague Prof. Burkhard Becher from the Institute for Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich were able to show that turning off particular cytokines (immune system signal transmitters) reduced the Alzheimer's typical amyloid-? deposits in mice with the disease. As a result, the strongest effects were demonstrated after reducing amyloid-? by approximately 65 percent, when the immune molecule p40 was affected, which is a component of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-12 and -23.

Relevant for human therapy

Follow-up experiments also relevant for humans showed that substantial improvements in behavioral testing resulted when mice were given the antibody blocking the immune molecule p40. This effect was also achieved when the mice were already showing symptoms of the disease. Based on the current study by Prof. Heppner's and Prof. Becher's team, the level of p40 molecules is higher in Alzheimer's patients' brain fluid, which is in agreement with a recently published study by American colleagues demonstrating increased p40 levels in blood plasma of subjects with Alzheimer's disease, thus showing obvious relevance for human therapy.

The significance of the immune system in Alzheimer's research is the focus of current efforts. Prof. Heppner and Prof. Becher suspect that cytokines IL-12 and IL-23 themselves are not causative in the pathology, and that the mechanism of the immune molecule p40 in Alzheimer's requires additional clarification. However, they are convinced that the results of their six-years of research work justify the step toward clinical studies in humans, for which they plan to collaborate with a suitable industrial partner.

IIn the context of other illnesses, such as psoriasis, a medication that suppresses p40 in humans has already been applied. "Based on the safety data in patients," comment Profs. Heppner and Becher, "clinical studies could now be implemented without delay. Now, the goal is to bring the new therapeutic approach to Alzheimer patients quickly."

Automotive Icon Jennifer Lopez Opens This Insane 100,000-Sq.Ft ...

Automotive Icon Jennifer Lopez Opens This Insane 100,000-Sq.Ft. Audi Dealership In DubaiExciting news out of the United Arab Emirates this week as famed automotive industry icon and noted Fiat enthusiast Jennifer Lopez was tapped to open Audi's latest mega-dealership in Dubai.

As we all remember, J-Lo starred in controversial, much ridiculed ads for the Fiat 500 last year, only for the public to discover that she wasn't really driving around the block at all. Fiat has since dumped that campaign for some ads that are slightly less annoying.

Not one to give up easily, J-Lo is now apparently spokeswoman-ing for Audi in the Middle East, as Motor Authority reported.

But the new facility is way more fancy than your normal neighborhood car dealership. As Motor Authority reports, it's not even called a dealership, but a "terminal," because it's 100,000 square feet and three stories of Audi madness with two car elevators and one floor exclusively dedicated to car customization. It is, apparently, the largest Audi dealership in the world.

The terminal also features what Audi calls a "Powerwall," a floor-to-ceiling screen that displays images of the cars and their customization options in 1:1 scale. I want to go to there.

Say what you want about J.Lo, she seems to be committed to staying in the automotive shill game. And I wish my ass looked that good in white pants, girlfriend.

Small Business Loans for Superstorm Sandy Victims | Small ...

Many small businesses have been hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.? Food trucks got washed away, retail shops are reeling, many have still not re-opened, transportation companies have been hit hard, and many others have been forced out of business or have taken a serious body-blow from Sandy.

One company that is doing their part is Accion.? Accion is a global nonprofit micro lender.? Their stated vision is to build a financially inclusive world with access to economic opportunity for all.

They recently announced their Sandy Recovery Business Loan Program.? It?s geared toward individuals who own businesses who have been hit and impacted by Hurricane Sandy.? The loans range from $1,000 up to $25,000.

One great thing about Accion is that they are a non-bank micro-lender.? That means they have much more flexible underwriting criteria than banks and they obviously don?t shy away from small loans.

Also, for the first 3 months you make no payments and pay 0% interest.? After 3 months the loan locks in at 4.99% for up to 48 months.? There are no prepayment penalties and the loan closing costs are a standard 3-5% with a $30 application fee that?s only paid if you?re approved.

The basic criteria are pretty simple:

  • They want FICO scores of 525 and above.
  • If you have any past due debts it must be less than $3000.
  • You must show adequate cash-flow to support the loan payments.
  • No bankruptcies in the last 12 months or foreclosures in the last 24 months.
  • No late payments on your rent/mortgage in the last 12 months.
  • At least 6 months of sales history.
  • You must own fewer than 4 mortgaged properties.

This is pretty basic stuff but, as with any loan application, there is no guarantee that you?ll be approved.? The hardest criteria may be that you need to be in an area impacted by Sandy.

This is very cheap money?get it now if you?ve been impacted by the hurricane.? Accion is a great organization that is doing great things globally.? Be part of that while you rebuild your life and business!

Texans playing Lions for a spot in the playoffs

DETROIT (AP) ? The Houston Texans have put themselves in a position to be the NFL's first team to seal a spot in the playoffs and to move a step closer toward earning home-field advantage in the AFC.

Houston (9-1) has won four straight and is 4-0 on the road this season, giving the Texans a great shot to be in consecutive postseasons for the first time.

"It shows the progress we've made," said tight end Owen Daniels, who has been with the franchise for seven of its 11 years of existence. "A few years ago, it took us until the end of the season to get that ninth win. We're at that ninth win already.

"We're trying to stack 'em up, but it's good that those are possibilities this early in the season."

Houston needs to win at Detroit (4-6) on Thursday and have a handful of teams lose, or tie, to earn a postseason bid by the end of the weekend.

The Lions, meanwhile, will have to pull off a string of upsets against a slew of good teams to reach the franchise's goal of making it to consecutive postseasons for the first time since the mid-1990s.

Just when it looked like Detroit was living up to the hype generated with last year's breakout season by winning three of four games to climb back .500 earlier this month, the Lions lost two in a row. And that has made last season seem more like an aberration than the start of successful run for a floundering franchise that hit rock bottom in 2008 as the NFL's first 0-16 team.

"We're not thinking about playoffs or anything else," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "We're thinking about the Houston Texans and that's plenty for us to think about right now."

Like all good teams, the Texans have proven they can win even when they don't play well.

Houston trailed the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars last week at home by 14 points in the fourth quarter before rallying for a 43-37 win in overtime.

The Texans' defense, which has been among the NFL's best all year, struggled until it made stops when they were needed. It didn't hurt that quarterback Matt Schaub and receiver Andre Johnson had career-best games.

Schaub connected on 43 passes for 527 yards passing, both totals tying for second most in league history, and Johnson set a personal best with 273 yards receiving. His franchise-record fifth touchdown pass was a screen to Johnson, who did the rest on a 48-yard score for the game-winner.

"You just never know in this league week to week what kind of game you're going to be in and we got caught in a shootout type of game with a lot of offense," Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. "We were fortunate enough to find a way to win."

Detroit did enough to lose 24-20 to the Green Bay Packers last week at home, where it had plenty of opportunities to get a much-needed win. The Lions' woes were made worse by a significant injury and distraction.

Left tackle Jeff Backus couldn't finish the first half because of a hamstring injury, which seemed to be in his right leg, and his 186-game starting streak that includes every game of his career is expected to end Thursday.

"It's hard to replace a rock that's been there for 12 years," said veteran center Dominic Raiola. "It's just different without him out there."

Detroit drafted Riley Reiff with the 23rd pick overall this year, planning to groom him as player to eventually replace Backus. The rookie might have to take on defensive end J.J. Watt, who ranks among NFL leaders with 11? sacks and leads all defensive linemen in the league with 11 passes defended.

Houston, though, won't have to worry about No. 2 receiver Titus Young taking advantage of one-one-one coverage because the Lions announced Monday he would be inactive because of his "unacceptable" behavior during the game against the Packers.

"When you're a player, it's your job to make the team happy," Schwartz said. "It's not the team's job to make you happy."

Lions fans have not been happy when it comes to Thanksgiving Day results.

Detroit has lost a franchise-record eight straight on the holiday ? by an average of three-plus touchdowns ? and has only one victory in the last 11 games in its annual showcase after winning nine of 12 games from 1989-2000.

How to Tell Real Clairvoyant Psychic Readings from Fakes

Want to look into your future or get intuitive advice before making an important decision? Count on clairvoyant psychic readings. The question is, how do you know they?re real?

If you search on the Internet alone, you will find an endless roster of ?psychics? who claim to be authentic, and maybe they are. But how do you really spot them in a sea of cons? When looking for authentic, reliable clairvoyant psychic readings, there are three main issues you?d like to focus on.

In a Rush

First, remember that real psychics work on energy, and real psychic energy does not come within one second after you tell your story. Real psychic energy takes a while for the psychic to find and receive so that he or she is able to give you the reading you want. Thus, if somebody starts making clairvoyant psychic readings without even thinking hard and deep into what you have just told them, be wary. A real psychic has to work at elevating their consciousness so as to reach a level that enables them to see beyond what is not visible to non-clairvoyants.

Too Much for Comfort

Second, when a ?psychic? is asking you one too many questions about your life or a part of it that is directly related to the clairvoyant psychic readings you seek, you know they?re just gathering information on which to base their ?reading? which, most often than not, turns out to be nothing but logical advice. It may be good advice, but it?s not psychic. Your mother can probably even give you a better version. Real psychic advice is one that nobody but another real psychic can give with the least details supplied by you. If

Too Much at Once

The third sign of real Clairvoyant Psychic Readings is the manner itself that they are given. For example, if you are talking to a psychic on the phone who starts giving you all these ?readings? while you hear them typing or even having a side conversation with someone, then you can be absolutely sure you?re wasting your time. For a psychic to be able to make all of these readings, they have to focus their energies into reaching that consciousness level that allows them to look into what others can?t. Working on the computer at the same time or talking to someone else while giving you a psychic reading is clearly deception.

Most importantly, always work with a psychic that you have good rapport with, or both of you could end up having difficulty trying to perform your roles in your psychic-client relationship. When this happens, it is likely that the person, even if they were a real psychic, will not be able to give you accurate readings.
