LibreOffice is a new name in free office software, but it?s closely related to OpenOffice, another free office suite, which we have found works well. But is LibreOffice as impressive?
OpenOffice has been around for almost 10 years, and downloaded free millions of times. Now some of its developers have produced LibreOffice, so it?s not surprising that the two pieces of software share many characteristics. Overall, the version 3.4.1 we tested performed well, making it a credible alternative to more established software like Microsoft Office. Plus it is free to download.
WHAT?S INCLUDED
LibreOffice programs look a bit like Microsoft Office programs from a few years ago and that?s no bad thing. They are simple to get to grips with, and the built-in help is superb, comprehensive and accessible.
Apart from the usual word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs, LibreOffice has database and drawing/charting programs. This is an advantage it has over Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, which do not have a database program included ? for that you?ll need to choose a more expensive version.
WIZARDS
There are drawbacks. The main one is that there?s little in the way of wizards and templates to help automate or speed up your work. These can be a help if you wish to create a club newsletter, CV, or household budget spreadsheet, for example. You can set these up manually, of course, but templates and wizards can save time.
Also, some complex spreadsheets created in Microsoft Excel that have macros (hidden programs that run calculations automatically) won?t work properly in LibreOffice. However, these things are unsurprising given that this is a free package.
LibreOffice has most of the features and functions of commercial software like Microsoft Office. It may lack finesse, and the LibreOffice website from where you download the suite looks spartan, but for most users this is an office suite that helps you get things done, free of charge.
Verdict: The software is easy to use and a touch better than OpenOffice. However, it lacks advanced features available with Microsoft Office.
